The 2018 Shamrock Bonspiel featured a smaller field of only 12 teams from all our club (including one team from the Sunday rental leagues). As usual, the players came decked out in festive costumes and sporting team names from the “Mór-Ríoghain Servers” to the “Here 4 the Beer”.
On the first weekend of March, eight players and their families traveled to Schenectady, NY to compete in the annual Schenectady Green Junior Bonspiel. Team Canada (Tyler Watson, Danny Bell, Chris Byrne & Tyler Rowley) went undefeated, and re-captured their 2017 title as the Schenectady Green Junior Bonspiel champions!
The 2018 Lyle Bradford Calcutta saw 12 teams and numerous team syndicates and owners participate for a chunk of the contest winnings. As usual, it was hard to predict the winners but after all was said and done, thje Rob Philion Rink claimed the top prize!
The marquee event of January is the annual Junior Invitational Leprechaun Bonspiel. MWCC fielded four of the 10 teams in the Recreational Division and one team in the Competitive division. Click the box to read all about it!
The Ladies Centennial year started off with a bang on December 2 with a Gala Dinner attended by more than 60 women, members past and present. Cathy Hughes (Curling Canada Governor and Liaison to Curling Quebec) presented plaques from Curling Canada and Curling Quebec, in recognition of the Day Ladies Branch of MWCC and their contribution to the sport of curling during this last 100 years.
This year’s festive classic on December 18th attracted 62 enthusiastic curlers from all parts of our club’s day, evening and instructional leagues. Many curlers sported colourful holiday sweaters and seasonal headgear (i.e David’s Yoda Santa, Russ’s leprachaun & Doug’s elf)
On November 26th, Trish Dempsey hosted Version 2 of the popular Paint Nite fundraiser in support of Kurling for Kids (K4K). A whopping $800 was collected by the 47 participants!
In what has turned out to be an unusual low turnout at the Grand Match & Grand Dame tournament, our 5 MWCC teams performed well posting a 3-0-2 record. Congratulations to our 2 women’s teams who swept to a 1-0-1 record and finished in 2nd place out of 15 teams !
