The 2023 Calcutta was filled with enthusiasm as 16 teams competed over 5 days in a bid to win cash for players and team owners. Almost a quarter of contestants were Instructional or Sunday league players. The pre-contest auction raised a record pile of loot as bidding reached high values for top teams. Throughout the week though, underdog teams emerged victorious over their rivals causing much anxiety to the holders of Exacta tickets and Pari-mutuel bets! After Tuesday’s games, four teams were left standing making it to the “A” semi-finals: Alex Hall, Rob Philion, Mark Romer and Tyler Watson. In Friday’s A Final contest, first time Calcutta winner Mark Romer and his teammates won over Tyler Watson’s team to seize the top prize in $$$$. Team Alex Hall won over Rob Philion’s Team to win the A consolation, while in the B division, Lester Shepherd’s Team prevailed over Stew Yaxley’s Team . In the C final, Team Adam Freilich won over Bruce Sexton’s Team and the D final on Thursday night went to Steve Holdaway’s team who won over Howie Myers & his team.
